Meet the #nerdbirds

Though covering the continental United States and coming from a wide variety of professional and personal backgrounds, the founding #nerdbirds were brought together by a passion for aviation and travel. After meeting on the final Virgin America flight in 2018, they’ve kept in touch, traveled together, and enjoyed trying to bring the fun back to flying.

This podcast covers not only their adventures around the globe and the people they’ve met along the way — but all aspects of the travel experience, from design and sustainability to destinations and food. Over time, they’ve realized how important it is to encourage a traveler mindset (vs. being a tourist) and have some other ideas up their sleeve 🙂 This truly is only the beginning!

What’s in a name? #nerdbird was the name of a Virgin America aircraft, which was based on a Twitter hashtag. Given where they met, and that most are “nerds” about (metallic) “birds,” the idea of being #nerdbirds seemed very fitting!

What are the episodes like? In 2020: Seasons 1 and 2 (episodes 1-50) introduced all of the #nerdbirds and covered a range of topics and stories from co-hosts Rachel and Jeremy, including introducing the Traveler Lifecycle.

Season 3 (episodes 51-75) consisted of a weekly news roundup hosted by Jeremy and Kai, and the weekend edition hosted by Rachel, who brought in other #nerdbirds to discuss topics in depth.

For 2021, co-hosts Kai and Rachel shifted the podcast to a weekly format and covered design, sustainability, and destination stories (lots of roadtrip suggestions given COVID-19). We also brought on board our first non-Virgin America-related #nerdbird Mark, who’s based in London.

In 2022, we shifted to shorter 10-15 minute “Travel Bites” episodes, where we share a personal travel tale and some advice around a particular topic. Brendan also brings us a Book of the Month from his vast collection to chat about. We’re also feeling the pull toward discussing more about diversity and mental health in travel.

Does your podcast have external guests? Yes, so far with episodes on family travel and travel photography. There is also a recurring series about the pilot’s perspective from Pilot Sarah:

And we’ve recently brought on Flight Attendant Joey! If you have ideas for future episodes or listener questions, ask us 🙂
